22 July manager or LeaderMy peer asks me what is the different between a manager and a leader today........ I answered her questions and let me tried to simplify here.
For me, they are two different people. Manager is more of getting the job done, execution orders, managing people and make sure everything is stable, dislike frequently changing of staff that disrupt his working schedules, they allocate resource to complete a task in most effective and most efficient way. Leader, on the other hand inspires people, and motivate them, they let go some of their authority and empower their subordinates, they also willing to develop them.
"If you are ambitious about your career, look for a leader; if you are satisfying with what you are doing, look for a manager." I said.
She then asked what kinds of manager/leader I wanna be in the future.
For me, I want to become a general manager/leader. I am interested in shaping the future of a particular task, influence my decision amongst level similar to what I used to be as a VP of my high school Student Union. Being general allows me to identify a person who is best to perform the role and devote more time on overall managing issues. Below is the list of skills I obtain through my three years in various part of the Student Union: - Teamwork/Leadership/Motivation and most importantly People Management - able to motivate my team delegate and empower their decision making skills - Listening and communication skills - communicate effectively while listen and accept opinion from others - Decision making and judgement in abstract situation - Multitasking/ cope well under pressure - Prioritising - being able to search amongst the tasks and rank their importance and action it - Think outside the box, we've got to look at every situation from different corners, nothing is impossible. - Control your emotions - be able to control my mentality
M/L in this 21st Century does similar things. Of course their scale is much bigger; they also have the necessary Business Acumen skills equipped so that they can apply it into their Business Model. Yet, I think these days, innovative leader is more important as the world commodities price is raising and their margin is squeezing. Moreover, a successful business also needs to be customer focus, listen and understand what customer needs to produce competitive advantage products that allow us to separate us from our competitors. I think they are pretty similar to a Student Union, we need to listen to their needs and innovative about our ideas to our student in order to strive for their support and get elected. Also we need improve our student welfare while keeping our budget in control.
My current role allows me to build up my business acumen while learn the corporation politics. I’m still working on it and working on it......... 18 July Seeking for ultimate destination - PlanningI have been reviewing the plan of my personal and career goal. I have been trying to figure out what I ought to be/do in three years time in 10/15 years time. I'm ambitious? Yes . I know.
I personally thinks that if you dare to think big then I can become what I wanna be. Nothing is impossible, it's just the matter of whether we have the gut to step out of the comfort zone; to take the risk and try something different, we have to think outside the box, to dare to dream BIG!
It's very important that we need to have a plan for ourself. If you have a clear goal, the earlier that you set out your goal are, the earlier you will strike it in the early stage of both your personal life and career.
I'm not asking everyone to be same as me as I know different people will have different personality and it's up to you to find the most comfortable way to be yourself to enjoy life.
But if you would like to work out a plan for yourself, here is some of my recommendations:
1) Visionize your dream/goal - think of what you wanna be in the future, what you wanna do. Once you have a vision of your future goal, we have to carefully plan what you need to do now to achieve this. Each step will become the many steps that you need to walk to get to the ultimate goal.
2) The plan should break down into to separate part. Static - short term and Dynamic - long term: we have set out a list of things that we have to achieve, how we goanna achieve it, what is the most important factors to achieve it, what resources do we need, what are the challenges/factors to prevent us to achieve it.... ask ourself and write it down....
3) Be realistic about your plan, most importantly the short term goal must be achievable to keep yourself motivated
4) Stick with it and executing it: Planning is not hard, stick with it and executing it as planned is the hardest part, in our life there are so many obstacles that prevent us to stick to our goal, too many events and information will also divert us from the original course. Thus, we have to be clear in our goal, once you lock down the target, strike the target like the flight fighters.
5) Review your plan: Every 1 or 2 years, replan if any situation is changed so that you keep track of your plan
In our life, we have to constantly re- prioritizing our tasks, our goal to get things done. To be effective, time management is a crucial skill not to be missed , to be able to allocate our scares resource - time to complete the maximum no. of tasks within a certain time frame.
However, one point to note here is finish the tasks is important, and so do the quality in completing the task.
6) Be passion about what you do
How can we ensure the quality in those tasks? Passion is the ultimate answer to this. Without passion, without motivation we can't ensure that we are performing the best and trying the hardest. Be passionate about what we do and we can then start to enjoy it and when we enjoy it, motivations come and so does other things and we will be sure to do the best out of it as we enjoy doing it.

Just my 2c! 14 July Life as usualLife as usual in Melbourne. Nothing big happens. I'm so happy to have my parents over here to accompany me. I don't know whhy I just feels like we havn't spent enough time with each other. Especially now I start to earn good money and I always want them to be here longer to enjoy their deserve retirement.
With mum and dad here, our house light up with laughters and of course clean and organised.
It's a pity that Mum only stay here for a month as she have to attend her exams at the end of July. Dad will be here longer until mid August.
I really hope that I could have my own house so that mum and dad can actually enjoying here. Dad can do planting and Mum can go shopping with me.
It's a bit weired that I don't really want them go, may be I saw they are getting old, may be I feel that they haven't enjoy what they should have enjoy after all these hard working years. I want to show them more places, I want to go travel with them. I want them to do things that they weren't able to do when they were young. They scarifies their life in return to our school fees, warm clothes, nice toys.
I need to work harder, I want to be with them longer............ 16 June Back to OzFinally, we had back to Melbourne and this concluded the end of our yearly hoilday. I didn't felt upset because I know I will see them again next year. I felt excitied instead because I know my new role is going to start in two months time. Same as usual we had brought a lot of clothes and stuff from HK, especially I had brought a Nestle cross over Chocolate Tee..... hahaha...
I fell into my bed and had a 3 hours sleep before I start to unpack my clothes and rearrange my clothes in my closet. I carefully select those one that I would not wear anymore and place it into the Salvation Army bag. Those one were the shoes and clothes that I hardly wear and some even had their price tag on since I brought them --- (Kevin said this is a symptoms of my shopaholic sickness ^.^)
We had visit Yunnan Puer High School on our way to SiShuangBanNa. In there, we had finally meet the 4 students that we sponsor for their living expenses and school fees for the pass few years. They really grown up and I wish them all the best in their like 'VCE' exam next year and get admitted into their dream UNIVERSITY.
I didn't went to work today and I guess my mind is still in the holiday mood. Happy time always pass quickly without a notice. This year, my mum and dad finally decided to retire and I had get a supplementary platium card so that they can use it whenever they want to. I can tell that my dad feel very proud of my success so far. I'm glad that they are happy too....
A feel like home when I back to AUS and I love here. Noel I miss u and all the best in HK, lets meet up again and had a long chat next time.

11 May Preparing for my annaul leaveJesus, I can't believe I'm flying back to HK in about 1 weeks and I can't wait to get out from here and meet my families and friends in HK.
I had a extremely hectic week and so tiring. I had held 3 trainings, 10 meetings, create a new project call "project starbucks"....why? Cuz we are sitting in the Starbucks when we had our meetings., and blah blah blah...
I flew to Sydney and had my teeth check up, same as last time, his customer is shock as I flew from Melbourne to visit my dentist in Sydney. He is just the best dentist that I ever had and I love to lie on the seat and watch DVD ... lol... My final wire is now with my teeth and it's so uncomfortable and makes me don't really wannna eat..... (A good excuse to lose weight yea ?) I had my hair color done, again with Ryoma san... I really love this salon now.... heeee
I'm just about to bring Mini out for a weekly catch up with her friends before I sent her to the Pet Minder next week.
It's Mother's Day today and I think all of my friends have to spend this special day with their mum.
And me is concentrating on my new Wii Fit.... with Mini.... heeee
I can't wait to back to HK , I can't wait go go shopping, I can't wait to see my friends, I can't wait to see my families, I can't wait to see my dog, I can't wait for my holiday...... :D
04 May What have I done after my examsFinally, I had finished all my CPA subject and feels like I"m out of the prision :)
I suddenly feels that I had so many times to do whatever that I want to.....
Ok, let see what had I done so far since Thursday.
Thur Night: I sleep right through to the next day... lol....
Friday: Went to work and here we comes the non-stop meetings. Friday night: I can't remember what I done but I rekon.. sleeping.....and chatting with NOel...
Saturday: I drove Mini girl to gromming and I drove myself to city for a hair treatment and perm my hair as well. Ryoma san said that my hair is pretty good and healthy and asked if I had used any Hair care product.
I'm been using Kerastase's products and highly recommended to you guys cuz it's really good and they wide variety that suit to all types of hair.
Kérastase Paris is the professional luxury hair care treatment institute - www.kerastase.com/ You can probably brought them in Kerastase salon or in those Hair products speciality shops in ball shopping Mall. The treatment/leave-in is about $60 and the shampoo/conditioner is about $30 but different lines will varies. If your hair is really dry should probably use the treatment every 2days replacing as a conditioner. try it out!!!
Sat Night: Brought two new clothes and went dinning with Uncle Simon and Peter. After I got home I watched Ugly betty, Greys Anatomy, CSI Les Vegas... I just loved the US drama so sosos much.
Sunday - Houseworking day, I cut the grass, vaccum/mop the carpet and floor, Clean the kitchen and toliet, wash the clothes... Swept the garden and drive way.....But I didn't wash my car.. Too lazy as the car is too big for me.... Then I went to Chadstone Borders, get myself a nice coffee and start reading books. Then I went home and drove Mini girl to waverley park to play with her firends... The great dane is just so big that he swing his tails and I'm yards away... lol... He is only 17months old and already up to my chest without jumping... I said it's a horse.... I think today we had about 20 odds dogs in the field.. :) I will tried to upload some picuters here next week.. I did took some, but I dunno why my cable doesn't recognise my phone =.=|||
Sunday Nite: Since Hubby is not here and there's no point for my to cook a full feast, so I decided to cook simple egg noodle soup with Teriyaki chicken :) Mini is having her dinner now followed by her favourite lactose free Milk..... Geez.. did she realize she is a very lucky dog?

14 March Just my 5 centsEverytime when I had my conversations with my role model, I felt that I'm just so tiny and my knowledge is so superficialness.. There are so many things awaiting me to be learn to become career successful. I look upon others as role models while others looks upon on me; which made me I felt it is critical for me to deepen my knowledge and skill so that I am responsible to others when I'm transferring my knowledge across. A sound Business knowledge is a really wide and infinite curriculum, which includes insights, analytical minds, stay viligant on the things that happening around us for example, ex-rate, interest rate, industry news, company strategies etc.... It's always very easy to say but hard to implement. Not only business knowledge is important but also the english skills too. I am fully aware that my english is below standard and horrible and this will become a big road block for my future career too. Being able to communicate fluently and effectively is the most important skills that a success people would have and at this stage, i'm still working on that. There are just too many things that I had to improve and learn in my life time and I couldn't do them at the same time. Yet, I wrote down all the point that I had to learn and start poritize them from 1 to 10 etc.. Then I plot them into my yearly wall planner. I also review my progress every quarter so that I can make sure that I stay on track and adjust any gaps that I have - this is what we call "Dynamic Forecast and Planning". Always looking forward on what I gonna do rather that what I had done really push me to an unthinkable boundaries. Forward Looking, this is my point! Within my plan, there is always more than 1 options, I focus on the main options while the others are contingency plans if my main plan doesn't work out or something happen. To ensure that I won't have unexpected surprise so that I could handle those things calmly and without any delays. We are living in a very competitive world and if we haven't continuously improve and reinvest ourself , we will soon be outdate and become uncompetitive -- Remeber we are all responsbile for our own life! 17 February Journey in Nutrition DivisionIt's been 3 month since I started in Nestle Healthcare Nutrition Division in Melbourne. This is a Division that Nestle acquries Globally from Novartis to strengthen their Health and Well being Image in our Nestle brand. Working as a Business Planning Analyst and report directly to our Division Controller. I've become more business minded work with key stakeholders in the business to highlight risks, opportunities and identify and drive continuous improvement projects with the business. I also monitor and scrutinise trends with a view to informing the group on discrepancies and opportunities. It gave me an excellent insight to the key processes that ensure that an business is run effectively and efficiently. Our division in Melbourne is not as big as our Beverage Division in Sydney, I have to become well rounded for almost everything. Our collegues just recently roll over to our Nestle SAP system, therefore I also act as a Superuser for in the FICO systems. The experience I gained from financial perspective : Pricing, Budgeting, Analysising, Transfer Pricing, Trade Spend Budgeting etcc.. To System processing, Project management: SAP implementation cycle, Transactional, Internal control etc... is un-explainable.
I couldn't have learnt any more than what I had learnt in these three months if I haven't accepted this role. I loved me role so much and I enjoyed so much being in Melbourne with all my families and friends :) My life couldn't be better .. ^.^
My life is shinning in here and I believe it will keep shinning for the rest of my life.

28 October To the celebration of our success :To the celebration of our success : K - Achieved his target profit from his business in China J - Achieved my career ambition in just 2 years We, decided to brought ourself a present. Everything has been finalise and paid off by cheque and it will be pick up by us on this Wednesday^^ It's a present that we never imgaine that we could have in just age 25 29 September Dramatic WeekLast two week is quite dramatic. Monday, I got the offer from Optus, accepted it and want to denined my compnay promotion. Tuesday, I called them and told them the turth, they insist I should go and meet with them. Wednesday, I flown to Melbourne and got pick up by the driver and met the country manager, my manager and HR manager. We have a nice chat and I admit that I like the environment there. Wednesday, I step into my door after to flown back to Sydney and my mobile rings, they offer me with a higher salary then what Optus offer. Thursday, I think about it and decided to go to melboune as I really wanna go back, so I called Optus and apologise and explain to them, they sounds ok and understandable. Friday, I recevie the e-contract and waiting for the offical to come via mail. I started to look for house arranging Removalist. A headhunter in Beijing called my Mobile and asked if i'm interest to work in Beijing.(?????) Saturday, I am sitting in front of my computer desk,still can't believe that I had made it to the 6 figures salary. I can't believe I'm leaving Sydney. I can't express how I'm felt in the pass week. 24 September I accepted the offer from OPTUSThe Final decision has been made, I had accepted the offer from OPTUS. And will be leaving Nestle on the26/10. The reason for leaving is partly because I want to get more exprosure and partly because the $100K package is just too tempting and mouth watering. Other factors that lead me to made up my minds are it's following my 3 years career plan that I have sent in 2005 and younger, funnier environment. FMCG industry is good to get experience but may not be able to provide you with a great salary package. They are generally seens as "underpaid" industry. Reviewing my last two years of work since graduate in 2005. I consider myself is successful and lucky. I do not think I can double my salary like this in the next two years. May be heading to $120K package by the end of 2010. My manager was extremely supportive for my move and he is very happy for me. In terms of the Melbourne Nestle promotion and relocate to Melbourne, I had rejected it base on the fact that they could not match up their salary to what's Optus offering and there is a 25k gap between Optus an nestle. My department head was saying that it would take another 3-4 years in order for me to climb to the Optus package level. I have started my detox diet today and hopefully it's work. Some of the people claiming that this program is not good but others do find it is useful. I'm still yet to reveal weather is it good or bad; Nevertheless I think it's worth to try. So much politics is going on in my company and rumor has it that a lot of colleagues are not looking for job merely because our company is too stingy in remuneration. Myself finds this is pretty true seeing that their are so many opportunities out there for us as a Business Analyst with a much higher pay. Especially I have reject an offer from other company which offers me $90k package. My friends kept reminding me to go with the money; however I think we have to determine what is important to yourself. Salary payment only hit your account once a month while you have to work in the company for another 19 days. Company cultures, environment, people is also an important factors to consider as well. Presently, I feels happy here, striving to success to improve the process of our company. In spite of the politics is getting worse in here. Some believe that an opportunity to promote may depends on who you know in the company, yet, this is just another controversial topics to other arguing that performance should be place at a higher view. Despite that I personally finds this is an interest topic, but I believe that without a doubt, either of them have to be in place in order to make this works. Of course, that will depends on "timing", "situation", and "people". In order to be success in the any of the company. Notwithstanding we have to adequately promote and market ourself to others. Socializing, building up our networks is an important factors; But we must also perform better than others. How? We have to continuously outperform by taking extra responsibility, result focus, initiative to looks for betters, leadership (both yourself and others). Don't just sit here and do whatever you are giving, but looks for opportunities to improvement. When I start to talk about this topic, there are just so much to share with you guys. For me, I dun think I will move to another company within another year simply because I do not find myself has learn what I have to. There are still too much for me yet to discover. May be I want to wait until I qualified as a CPA in mid next year before I come back to this "changing company" and see what happens. heeeee.... nothing much just feel bore..... XD 11 August Suprise management letterIt's pretty unbelievable. I got several lucky things happend to me last week. 1. Mr S have to take care of all his own duties so I dun need to do it for him anymore. He apologise to me. Ho Ho Ho.... :D 2. Received management letter and finally finished my graduate program. This is my 4th pay rise in two years :P But I got 37% increase of my package. Now earning $71K :D 3. Got apporach from my job agent asking if i'm interested in working with Unilever pay $72K package. At first, I give it a go and passed though all the interviews. They called me again but I told then about the letter I received yesterday. So they have to talk to the management see if they are willing to offer a higher salaries. Conculsion, it is my lucky week so I go get a lotteries today :) I think I am pretty lucky.
